Article
Here are some great tips if you've ever had questions about whether or not to file a claim.
For your convenience, I summarized the important points from a recent article in The Atlanta Journal Constitution. If you would like to read the entire article, please click here. Why you should try err against filing a lot of small claims
Expert J. Robert Hunter, director of insurance at the Consumer Federation of America and former Texas insurance commissioner and a former federal insurance administrator says, "What you really want is something to protect you against a big claim. You don't want to file a bunch of little claims that put you at risk for your insurer dropping you to where you don't have protection for the big claim or it becomes costly for you to have coverage."
How to avoid filing small claims
- Keep your property well maintained, for example, by investing in maintenance contracts, to help prevent damages that lead to claims.
- Weigh your out-of-pocket costs versus the chance of higher premiums.
- Likewise, consider taking out a higher deductible, which can lower premiums.
What will likely raise your premiums?
A one-time accident, especially an "act-of-god" will likely not raise your premiums, however, a claim which could potentially reoccur has a higher risk of raising your premiums.
